Lycra galore: The annual Collie to Donnybrook Cycling classic is on this Saturday, and is sure to be a hit for spectators and competitiors alike. Photo: Shannon Wood.Spring is coming

A more cheerful opening than the Game of Thrones “winter is coming”.

It seemed like spring on Sunday, with sunny weather tempting many people out into their gardens.

Even if officially spring doesn’t arrive until September 1, Friday August 26 will look like spring in the Collie Central shopping mall, when the lovely ladies of the Collie Cancer Support Group celebrate Daffodil Day.

Daffodils are such a bright cheery colour that they make a great symbol of hope.

You can do your bit by buying some daffodils, or, if like me you have allergies, you can purchase some of the merchandise on offer.

Spring into Collie

The Spring into Collie festival will once again provide a wealth of functions and things to do, linking in to the Griffin Festival, the Rotary Adventure Race, the Collie Races, the wildflower season and the Collie Speedway.

After a long cold winter, it will be good to see all these attractions and activities.

Roaming gnomes

The Collie library is gearing up to welcome gnomes for the forthcoming school holidays.

The staff are hoping local people will “donate” their gnomes for the first week of the holidays so that Collie has its own temporary “Gnomesville”.

They are asking that people bring their gnomes in to the library, giving them a name and a life story.

Anyone who has been to Gnomesville will know the drill.

After their short holiday among the books and dvds, the gnomes will return home after October 7.

Sounds like some great photo opportunities – maybe the gnomes can have their own Facebook page or blog!

Quiz night

Fund raising for the CSHS ANZAC 2017 group is warming up, with a quiz night planned for Saturday, September 10.

Doors open at 6.30pm for a 7pm start.

Tables of 8 are planned, but individual tickets will be available.

Tickets are $10 per person, and you can purchase them at Collie Drycleaners.

There will be a licensed bar, hot chips and bar snacks, a silent auction and prizes galore.

Collie to Donnybrook

The Collie to Donnybrook Cycling Classic is on this Saturday, August 20.

The race will start outside the Crown Hotel on Throssell Street at 12.30pm.

Spectators welcome.

Farewell Janet

For 14 years, Janet has been working to keep local women healthy, starting the Well Women’s Clinic at the Collie River Valley Medical Centre.

Tomorrow is her final day, and she was trying to slip away quietly, but I for one cannot let her go without saying thank you for all she has done.

We are very lucky in Collie to have dedicated medical professionals, and Janet ranked right up there with the best.

Thanks, Janet, hope you enjoy your well earned retirement.

Country Music Club

The Collie Country Music Club presents ‘Country Horizon’ plus guest artists.

The show will be on at the North Collie Hall, on Sunday, August 21 at 1pm-4.30pm.

BYO alcohol, light refreshments are available, door prize and raffle on the day.

Coming Up:

Collie to Donnybrook and Return: Saturday, August 20.
