Strong competition between buyers ensured the top pens of steers and heifers reached the $4 a kilogram mark.

The yarding was up on last month’s sale and Mt Gambier and Districtsaleyards manager Peter Mitchell said he expected prices to remain solid for producers untilbigger numbers filtered intothe fat sale market in spring.

He said prices for steers were solid at Friday’s sale, while the quality ofcows and calves saw prices drop.

“And heifer prices varied a bit,” Mr Mitchell said.

“There’s always going to be a couple of bargains.”

Cracking the $4/kg mark was apen of 17 Angus/BB steers av 315kg from Bernie Earthmoving sold at $1300 or $4.13/kg.

DAY OUT: Hamish and Connor Hill, Meningie, checked out the lines of cattle on offer at the Mt Gambier store sale on Friday, with their mum and dad, and nan and pop.

Wallaroo Park sold 15 16-17 month-old Hereford steers av 345kg to MC Kerr &Co, Hamilton, at $1400 or $4.06/kg.

Wattleview Holdings sold 16 Pathfinder-blood Angus steers av 451kgat $1690 or $3.75/kg to TFI, and 13 Angus cross steers av 417kg at $1575 or $3.78/kg to Teys Charlton.

A pen of 14 Pathfinder-blood Angus steers av 419kg sold at $1585 or $3.78/kg to TFI, while another 21 Pathfinder-blood Angus steers av 352kg sold at $1390 or $3.95/kg.

Ten 12-16 month-old Hereford steers av 441kg from MC&JM Northcott sold at $1580 or $3.58/kg.

Bendulla sold 18 12-14 month-old European Union-accredited Hereford steers av 368kg at $1510 or $4.10/kg.Patanga Pastoral Co. sold 26 Bundera and Yanburgan-blood Shorthorn steers av 391kg to MC Kerr &Co, at $1500 or $3.84/kg.

Heifer prices started high with Teys Charlton buying two of the first three pens, with 11 Angus heifers making $1475, and 12 from Hillview av 406kg making $1390 or $3.42/kg.

20 Angus Simmental cross heifers av 294kg from Childerley Park, Naracoorte, sold at $1175 or $4/kg to Miller Whan & John, Mt Gambier, SA.
