South Australia man Robert Cameron has applied to council to open the new business in town.

However, council received two objections from concerned residents about the tattoo parlour, with one resident believingsuch a shop atKaniva would be detrimental to the town and district.

Another resident believed the shop would have a bad influence on the town’s youth.

Council planning and environment manager Gillian Bradshaw recommended council approved the planning permit at its meeting on Thursday. In a report to council, she said most of the objections were not based on evidence.

“An objector has an obvious concern for the youth of the town but has not offered any additional information abouthow they believe the businesswill affect the youth,” she said.

“It is an offence to tattoo anyone under the age of 18 in Victoria, and the applicants have stated they will require photo identification, particularly for young adults, to verify the person’s age before tattooing.”

Ms Bradshaw said the proposed business would be a positive investment in the town’s economy.

“It willprovide a new option for tourists and visitors to the town,” she said.

“The proposed business will lead to the reactivation of a vacant shopand will have a positive effect on the economy.

“The use of the site as a tattoo parlour should not negatively affect the character of the town.”

Ms Bradshaw said Mr Cameron would not provide food and drink vending machines for clients, despite that being his regular practice, as he would prefer people support the town’s traders and buyfood and drinks from nearby shops.

“The applicant has also provided a smoking area at the rear of the shop for clients to use, rather than have them smoking in the street, which mightoffend some passers-by in thestreet,” she said.
